Overview
Each of our four directorates has a key role to play in all aspects of the Department’s core business, from strategic planning and policy development through to delivering programs and services to build and support WA’s workforce, and is led by an Executive Director.
Director General: Ms Jodie Wallace
As independent statutory bodies, the WA State Training Board and the WA Training Accreditation Council (TAC) report directly to the Minister.
Our directorates
Office of the Director General
The Office of the Director General provides strategic leadership, governance and executive coordination for the Department and the State’s skills, training and workforce development system. The Office is responsible for executive and ministerial services, strategic planning and coordination, communications and marketing, internal audit and risk management, and TAFE governance. The Office also provides the secretariat for the Training Accreditation Council, which regulates Registered Training Organisations delivering training only in Western Australia.
Skills Strategy and Policy
Skills Strategy and Policy is responsible for workforce development strategy, policy and planning, VET system stewardship, and workforce intelligence to inform the strategic direction of skills, training and workforce development in Western Australia. The directorate leads state workforce strategy, industry and regional engagement, research, analytics and evaluation, VET policy and implementation, and intergovernmental relations. The directorate is also responsible for the Clean Energy Skills National Centre of Excellence and provides the secretariat for the WA State Training Board.
Training Markets and Workforce Services
Training Markets and Workforce Services manages public investment in training and workforce services to support Western Australia's workforce needs and economic priorities. The directorate is responsible for training market management, including training funding and contract management, apprenticeships and traineeships, skilled migration, employer incentives, training infrastructure planning and investment, and procurement. The directorate also administers training and workforce programs and oversees the Muresk Institute.
Training Sector Services and Capability
Training Sector Services and Capability provides services and capabilities that support Western Australia’s TAFE colleges, the broader training sector, industry, and government. The directorate supports training sector capability and is responsible for student and provider systems, information and data, and digital transformation and technology that enable a modern, responsive, and high-performing training system. It also promotes excellence in vocational education and training through the WA Training Awards and WorldSkills competitions and supports international education and training through TAFE International Western Australia.
Business Services
Business Services provides the people, financial, governance and integrity services that support the Department and the broader training sector. The directorate is responsible for people, culture and safety, financial management, governance and integrity, and provides shared finance and human resource services to TAFE colleges. The directorate also supports workforce capability and continuous improvement across the sector, and is responsible for Aboriginal policy planning and reconciliation.
Muresk Institute
The Department owns and manages Muresk Institute, which supports WA's agriculture industry by brokering agriculture and other innovative training and research programs.
TAFE International Western Australia
We manage and support international students studying at WA TAFE colleges through TAFE International WA (TIWA).
WA Migration Services
TAC Secretariat
The Training Accreditation Council (TAC) is WA's registering and course accrediting body. It is responsible for the quality assurance and recognition of vocational education and training services in WA. While the Council itself remains an independent statutory body reporting directly to the Minister, the Department assumed responsibility for the TAC Secretariat on 1 January 2019.

Office of the State Training Board
The Office of the State Training Board (OSTB) provides secretariat and research support for the WA State Training Board.
As a branch of the Department, the OSTB sits within the Policy, Planning and Innovation directorate.
